This is a reaction paper written for my History 1 class under Sir Peps.

The Guerilla is a Poet is one of the entries of the 1st CineFilipino Film Festival last September of 2013. The film is basically a flashback of events in the 70’s which simply shows how the people and the government of the Philippines were during Ferdinand Marcos’ regime. The film narrates the life experiences of Jose Maria Sison, his friends, some underground movements and the people’s misery under Marcos.

There are three major things that captured my interest in this film. First is the concept; an informative and creative depiction. Far from the common documentary films, The Guerilla is a Poet features a unique and interesting plot. The inserted interviews in some scenes did not actually ruin the fluidity of the whole storyline; instead, it made the story more realistic. Though the film is kind of narrative, it did not bring in boredom. It has something in it that gets in touch with every viewer’s attention and that thing is my second basis. The characters. It is undeniably true that each character in this movie portrayed every role perfectly. An example is Joma’s character. I see him as a simple, calm, smart yet also a tough and brave man. My favorite scene, in which Joma’s in, is when he was arrested and was having a conversation with Marcos which was in captured in photographs. It was a very concrete presentation of his confidence and strong hold of his principles even in times of trouble. Each character has different ways of showing off but all of them were able to do the main goal, to communicate well to the audience. The last but not the least, the cinematography. The lighting, the movement of the shots, the flow, the music, everything worked beautifully together. My favorite part was during Joma’s imprisonment. The moment wherein everything was dark except for his hand, I think it symbolized his loneliness during the solitary confinement. I felt his gloom through an incredibly artistic way.

The Guerilla is a Poet is a great film not just because it is merely informative but also because of the way on how it informs. It captures everyone and communicates effectively to relay the information. The story wasn’t just seen, it was felt.
