Contemplative Essay

Comm 1 under Sir Reginald Quirong

May 22, 2015

I was trying to look for a good topic to write about until I found myself scrolling up and down on my Facebook news feed. Why am I even here? I’m the kind of person that checks my account every single hour of the day. These days, it is very impossible to miss out a day without reading a post with #WalangForever or in English, “Forever doesn’t exist” in my facebook feed. At first, it was all fine, I got nothing wrong to say about it, I did not even think about it; but, later on, it hit me entirely and annoyed me to the super highest level. Like, ugh! It’s all around me, online or offline, everyone kept on saying it. Until today, I asked myself, does forever really exist? Now, I finally got some answers.

The existence of forever depends on how people perceive and associate it in context. Mathematicians, starting from the ancient Greeks, believe in infinity. For example, in geometry, a “Line” has infinite length; it goes in both directions without end. Philosophers, such as Aristotle, believe in eternity. He believes in the eternity of the world. The religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Judaism, and the Bahá'í Faith believe in immortality. They believe that there is life after death. These may be different words but all of them mean the same. As a normal person, I believe in forever. I believe that forever exists but not everything in this living world can last forever.

“Forever” can be a noun or an adverb. It is defined as a seemingly interminable time. Something that is endless, eternal, and everlasting. This word is commonly associated with love and relationships. It is often used to make a promise sound even better, for example, “I will love you forever,” or for a song, “As endless as forever, our love will stay together.” It sounds so comforting but so hurting whenever it’s broken, right? I have read various online posts containing the #WalangForever and found out that most of them are composed in a sad and lonely tone which may imply that those people may have encountered heartbreaks. For me, forever’s connection with relationships makes it look like impossible to exist. Why? Maybe, it is simply because most of the relationships fail and would not last until the end. Then, another question came up, how about those long-lasting relationships? Will they reach forever? When is forever? Sadly, we can never tell.

The Walang Forever statement that spreads all over the country today is so misleading. It kills the original meaning of the word. I don’t know if people truly understand what they are saying. I think they’re blinded by bitterness. The association of love with forever can’t be used as basis of its existence. Have you ever tried associating forever in different things? Let us try Change. Let’s say, Change is forever. Does it sound acceptable? I think it does. We are all familiar with the quote, “Change is the only constant thing in the world”. Therefore, change is endless, change is forever.

Forever is an abstract noun. It is intangible. Our five senses got no power to prove its existence. Other examples of abstracts are love, hate, truth and anger. We cannot see, hear, touch, smell or taste these things but we surely understand and know that these things exist right? Same as forever, we may not experience it but forever is real. I think no one has the right to tell that forever doesn’t exist because I believe that no one ever has reached the end. Forever is impossible to witness since all of us can’t live eternally. Yes, we die. Nevertheless, even death is questionable. Death can or can’t be the end. We cannot tell what happens after death, whether it could really be the end or could it be the start of something that lasts forever. No one can ever see how forever works.
